KVM: software or hardware?
Abstract:
What is the different between Simple Remote Management Infrastructures (SRMI)
and Switch Control Solution software? This article explains SRMI haradware,
the available for SRMI maintenance and basic user operation and the vendor-centric
software solutions offered by hardware vendors.
Managed KVM switching is the concept of providing support and integration for Analog, KVM over IP, Serial over IP and even Power over IP switches whether the devices deployed in any data center are in the form of heterogeneous or homogenous manufacturers' brands.
Worldwide, KVM is a billion dollar industry and managed KVM is new. Its not widely available so who are the players and what value proposition do they offer. Why and what should users look for? Where can they find it and will the CIO/CFO need to spend another $500,000.00 to replace existing switches.
In today's world of merged companies, IT departments can suddenly find a mixed assortment of tools for remote management have been thrust upon them. To make matters worst, it also comes with users who understandably have proficiency, operating knowledge and a propensity towards this inconsistent diversity. After all, the learning curve alone can temporarily cripple an existing operation. Surprisingly, the best solution for the CIO may come from outside the hardware industry in the form of middleware that tackles how KVM switches are viewed as much as the business model surrounding how a variety of technicians operate across multiple data centers.

Managing Remote Management Technologies
Abstract:
Highly technical and inherently intelligent, information technology users always seems to be faced with a single constant - “change”. If it’s not the latest modifications to your favorite word processor, it’s perpetual improvements in hardware or an ever growing mix of new technologies being deployed in the data center. By no fault of any operation, a myriad of new remote management techniques evolve with the discovery of every new hardware device that promises improvement. While the hardware and software purchased last year is not ready for retirement, the latest innovations offer far too many advancements to ignore.
